An eighttime Academy Award nominee, she was nominated for Hondo , Summer and Smoke , Sweet Bird of Youth , Youre a Big Boy Now , Pete n Tillie , Interiors and The Pope of Greenwich Village , before winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Carrie Watts in The Trip to Bountiful .

Page was born in Kirksville, Missouri. She was the daughter of Edna Pearl and Leon Elwin Page, who worked at Andrew Taylor Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery . He was an author whose works included Practical Anatomy , Osteopathic Fundamentals , and The Old Doctor .
